About me

Professor of Migration Law and Human Rights at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and a member of the UN Working Group on Involuntary and Enforced Disappearances. My research and teaching cover topics in the areas of international law, international human rights law, and migration law, with special focus on missing persons, border violence, and memory laws.

After receiving my Ph.D. from the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2016, I was a Postdoctoral Researcher in an EU-funded project on Memory Laws in European and Comparative Perspective (2016–2019). Subsequently, as an assistant professor in the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, I collaborated in the project MEMOCRACY (2021-2024), which scrutinized the intersection of memory laws and democracy in Central and Eastern Europe. During 2021-2024 I led a project on missing migrants funded by the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions at the Centre for Fundamental Rights of the Hertie School.

In addition to my academic work, I am a human rights practitioner. In August 2022, I was appointed by the UN Human Rights Council as a member of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. Until my nomination to the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, I have been involved in the process of drafting the General Comment on enforced disappearances and migration for the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances (2020–2021). I also worked as a Policy Advisor on enforced disappearances at the German Institute for Human Rights (2019–2020).

I am the author of the monograph Rights of Families of Disappeared Persons: How International Bodies Address the Needs of Families of Disappeared Persons in Europe (Intersentia, 2021) and co-editor of Enforced Disappearances. On Universal Responses to a Worldwide Phenomenon. My articles were published in Law and Social Inquiry, Leiden Journal of International Law, European Constitutional Law Review, International Journal of Human Rights, Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights and European Convention on Human Rights Law Review, among others.
